Stage Door is a 1937 nominee for best Picture and tells the story of a group of woman living in a boarding house and attempting to break into show business.
The movie stars Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn and Adolphe Menjou. The movie is known for its snappy dialogue and one-liners, much of it ad-libbed by the actresses. The film featured Lucille ball and in smaller roles Eve Arden and Ann Miller.
Hepburn plays the daughter of a mid-western millionaire who comes to NYC to anonymously break into show business. Her father objects and works quietly to sabotage her efforts, while the rest of the girls struggle day to day to find work and deal with romantic entanglements.
The film is considered a classic today, but audiences of the day did not respond to it and it's failure at the box office contributed to Hepburn being labeled "box-office poison" for a number of years.
At The Movie House rating ***1/2 stars.
