35 years of Summer Blockbusters - June 1


June 1, 2007 - Three years ago the film Knocked-Up was released and continued the streak of highly successful R rated comedies. Written, directed and produced by Judd Aptow this "unromantic" comedy, starring Seth Rogen was a critical and box office hit. It appeared on many Top ten lists for 2007 and made $218 million in worldwide ticket sales on a production budget of $27 million.

Also opening three years ago was the thriller Mr. Brooks with Kevin Costner. The film about a serial killer was a modest hit and received mostly positive reviews. At The Movie House rating **1/2 stars.


June 1, 2005 - Opening five years ago was the film adaptation of the popular book, The Sisterhood Of the Traveling Pants. This film had a huge following amongst teenage girls and received mostly positive reviews. At The Movie House rating **1/2 stars.


June 1, 2001 - Opening nine years ago was the lame and over the top comedy What's The Worst That Could Happen, with Danny Devito and Martin Lawrence. The film was marred by a lame script and the two leads being more loud than funny. At The Movie House rating *1/2stars.


Also opening was the surprisingly funny Rob Schneider comedy The Animal.

June 1, 1990 - twenty years ago Arnold Schwarzenegger had a huge hit with the sci-fi action film Total Recall. Based on a book by Philip k. Dick this mars based action adventure movie the film was a critical and box office hit. Roger Ebert said it was "one of the most complex and visually interesting science fiction movies in a long time." At The Movie House rating *** 1/2 stars


June 1, 1984 - Twenty-six years ago Star Trek III: The Search For Spock opened. This third sequel in the series takes place immediately following the second film and was part of a three part story arc. Extremely well received by fans and critics the film showed there was still life in the Star Trek franchise.

Also opening was Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In America. This complex film about the rise of mobster's in America was 229 minutes long when it played in Europe. Against the director's wished Warner bros. cut the film and released a 139 minute version (90 minutes cut). The film was widely panned and unsuccessful. Years later it was restored and the full length version is considered one of the best films of the 1980's. At The Movie House rating *** 1/2 stars.


A third film Streets Of Fire, marketed as a "rock and roll fable" was released. It was a box office flop but has developed a small cult following, mostly due to the music. At The Movie House rating - not rated


June 1, 1979 - Thirty-one years ago Peter Fonda starred and directed the lame western comedy Wanda Nevada with a very young Brooke Shields. At The Movie House rating - not rated


Also opening was the cult classic horror film Phantasm. At The Movie House rating - not rated


June 1, 1975 - Thirty-five years ago peter Fonda and Warren Oates starred together in the "B" movie mash-up Race With The Devil, a car chase, action, horror flick. At The Movie House rating - not rated


Also opening in the United States was the British horror film The Wicker Man with Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland and Christopher Lee. At The Movie House rating ***stars
