365+ movies in 365 days: Day 202 - The Emperor's Club

The Emperor's Club follows in the steps of Goodbye, Mr. Chips, The Dead Poet Society and Mr. Holland's Opus. Kevin Kline plays Professor William Hundert, a classics professor at an all boys prep school. He views his mission in life, not only to educate the boys in his classroom, but to mold their character. To use examples of great men in history, to show how they to could be great. One year he he has a boy, Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch), the son of a U.S. Senator, who seems beyond his ability to influence. The film follows Hundert and bell through one difficult year and we meet Bell again, fully grown (Joel Gretsch) looking to redeem himself for the things he did in prep school.

The film has a strong message and a excellent performance by Kevin Kline and these are the two reasons to watch the film. Otherwise the film is entertaining, but does not have anything original to offer.

At The Movie House rating ** 1/2 stars
