365+ movies in 365 days: Day 11- Star Trek Vi: The Undiscovered Country

"In space all warriors are cold warriors". I continued the "cold war" theme with the sci-fi film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

William Shatner and the rest of the crew returned for this final adventure of the original cast from the Star Trek TV series and movies. Captain Kirk is faced with a peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingons, he abhors the idea, but goes along because duty calls. He soon finds himself accused of assassinating the Klingon Chancellor and is caught up in a secret attempt to sabotage the peace talks, that would end years of fighting between the two factions.

The film is an excellent final coda to the long running original series. The script is a vast improvement over the fifth sequel Star Trek V: The Final Frontier from 1989. The film benefits from a rousing turn by Christopher Plummer as General Chang, a Shakespeare spouting Klingon and Kirk's new nemesis.

The film opened to critical praise and strong box office. The films success can be contributed to the director Nicholas Meyer. he directed the first sequel, the highly regarded Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and his deft touch shows as he ramps up the action, but still manges to maintain the idealistic discussions so prominent in the Star Trek franchise.

I watched the film on the newly remastered Blu-ray and it was stunning. With the high def visuals and digital sound it was like watching it for the first time.
