365+ movies in 365 days: Day 34- Robin Hood

Tonight I went to see Robin Hood at the Century Tanforan Theatres. The film, directed by Ridley Scott, is a retelling of the Robin Hood story. It's actually more like a prequel setting up how Robin was declared an outlaw. The film is very gritty and really captures the blood, sweat and tears of 12th century England.

Russell Crow plays Robin Longstride, an archer in the King Richard's army. Through fate and deed he is sworn to deliver the sword of Sir Robin of Loxley back to Nottingham. There he takes on the identity of Robin of Loxley and works to defend the folks of Nottingham from a ruthless King John and an invading French Army. In Nottingham he also meets Marion, played by Cate Blanchett, wife to the deceased Sir Robin.

The film reminded me of a mash-up between Braveheart, Gladiator and Elizabeth. It has a great set-up and then as the themes and intricacies of the plot build, it begins to drag and bog down under it's own weight. I kept thinking of Monty Python And The Holy Grail and wanted to yell "get on with it!"

The acting is great and Ridley Scott is at the top of his game when it comes to technical craftsmanship, but the film lacked the passion and high adventure I associate with the name Robin Hood.
At The Movie House rating **1/2 stars.
