35 years of Summer Blockbusters - May 12th

May 12, 2006 - Six years ago Warner Bros. released Wolfgang Petersen's Poseidon, a remake of 1972's Poseidon Adventure. The film was notable for fantastic visual effects and was nominated for an Academy Award. But after the film's primary set piece, the capsizing of the ocean liner, the film fell flat. It had none of the character development of the original. You don't really care what happens to these people and with a brief running time of 98 minutes, the film is over so quickly you hardly have time to care. The film opened with a very disappointing box office and was never the big event picture Warner hoped for.

May 12, 2000 - Ten years ago Battlefield Earth opened. This pet project of John Travolta's, based on the book by Ron L. Hubbard, was one of the biggest flops in Hollywood history. It is widely considered one of the worst movies ever made.

May 12, 1989 - Twenty One years ago Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor appeared in their third film together See No Evil, Hear No Evil. The film was widely panned by critics, but was a commercial success and no.1 at the box office for two weeks.
