365+ movies in 365 days: Day 17 - Shrek

In preparation for the release of Shrek Forever After this weekend I began a "Shrekathon" with the viewing of Shrek. The film was a smash hit when it was released in 2001. With it's simple good hearted story it appeal to kids, while it's pop culture references, sly in-jokes (many aimed right at Disney) and popular music the film had broad appeal for adults. It played in theatres for 29 weeks during the summer of 2201 and went on to win the newly created Oscar category Best Animated Film at the 2002 Academy Awards. Nine years later the pop references and music slightly date the film, but that doesn't take anything away from how funny it is. In watching the film a few times I realized the real heart of the movie is the story of the relationship between Shrek and Donkey. Their friendship carries the film and Eddie Murphy's comedic talents are completely evident in the personification of Donkey. I am curious to know how much he and Mike Meyers ad-libbed together.
