35 years of Summer Blockbusters - May 18th

May 18, 2007 - Three years ago Shrek The Third opened. The film had mixed reviews with many complaining that the heart of the other two films was replaced with snark and it was no longer a series for children. And it certainly was not children going to see it, the film had a total worldwide box office of just under $800 million dollars. At The Movie House rating **1/2 stars

May 18, 2001- Nine years ago one of my favorite films, Moulin Rouge, was released. This visually dazzling re-imaging of the famed Parisian nightclub was directed by Baz Lurhmann and starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. the film was a feast for the eyes and ears. It had great reviews and mixed box office. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture.
At The Movie House rating **** stars

Also released nine years ago was the original Shrek. The movie spawned for sequels, TV holiday special and a Broadway musical. The three films combined have earned over $2.2 billion at the box office as of 2008. At The Movie House rating ***1/2 stars

May 18, 1994 - Sixteen years ago Gus Van Zant's Even Cowgirls Get The Blues opened to bad press, bad word of mouth and bad box office. Not rated by At The Movie House ratings

May 18, 1990 - Thirty years ago Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn starred in Bird On A Wire. The film was  an action, comedy, thriller directed by John Badham. Gibson plays a man in the witness protection program being chased by the men he gave testimony against. Hawn is his ex-fiance who gets caught up in the chase. It had a $20 million budget and made $70 million. At The Movie House rating **1/2 stars

Thirty years ago Robin Williams starred in the off beat comedy Cadillac Man. Williams was funny but the comedy was dumb. * 1/2 stars

Also opening was the Top Gun knock-off Fire Birds with Nicholas Cage. Not very good.
At The Movie House rating ** stars

May 18, 1984 - Twenty Six years ago the studios released two comedies, Finders Keepers directed by Richard Lester and a teen comedy called Making The Grade. Even the posters look bad. neither film is rated by At The Movie House ratings.

May 18, 1979 - Thirty One years ago the film Winter Kills was released. This all star political thriller was based on a book by Richard Condon, author of The Manchurian Candidate. It also dealt with the mystery surrounding an assassination. The film was financially troubled, the producers declared bankruptcy three times and shooting was shut down twice. One of the producers was murdered by the mafia during production. The film received rave reviews but was not a success. Many felt the fault laid in the scripts focus on the dark humor elements of the book, turning the thriller into a black comedy. Not rated by At The Movie House ratings.
