365+ movies in 365 days: Day 4 - Spider-Man 3

I chose to screen Spider-Man 3 today. I have not seen the film since it's original release and I wanted to see of it was as bad as I remembered it. It was worse. After seeing once and knowing how it plays out it felt very long and the pacing was off. The film is 20 minutes too long and that could be because it is over-written and over-plotted and just has too much story stuffed into one film.

The story deals with Peter Parker struggling with his dual identity as Spider-Man and it almost feels like it was the scripts for two different Spider-Man movies mashed together. Three weak villains can't make up for the absence of one great one like Doc Octopus or The Green Goblin. The romantic story line with Peter and Mary Jane also feels forced. And what is James Cromwell doing in this film with just 2 brief scenes.

The actors do their jobs adequately but some of the characters are not fully realized. The Sandman develops this amazing power and seems to just take it in stride.

I think Sam Rami was stymied by a preordained release date (Sony Scheduled the May 2007 release, just a month after Spider-Man 2 was released in June 2004) that did not allow for better script development. I also have issues with CGI, many of the effects look like just that, effects. Its almost like they used the technology from the 2001 Spider-Man film.

The news from Sony is that both Toby Maguire and Sam Rami have quit over creative quality concerns and there will be no Spider-Man 4 in 2011. Instead Sony is going to "reboot" the franchise and start from the beginning. Look for a brand new Spider-Man in 3-D to hit theatres the summer of 2012.

I originaly saw the film at the Sony Loew's Metreon in San Francisco. Today's screening was DVD upscaled on a Blu-Ray player.
