35 years of Summer Blockbusters - May 15th

May 15, 2009 - One year ago Angels & Demons opened in 3500 theatres across the U.S. This sequel to the popular DaVinci Code, again starred Tom Hanks and was directed by Ron Howard. It grossed $46 million it's first weekend and knocked Star Trek from the #1 spot. At the Movie House rating **1/2 stars.

May 15, 2003 - Seven years ago Matrix:Reloaded opened. This sequel to 1999's surprise hit The Matrix was so highly anticipated that it was bound to not measure up to expectations. It received mostly positive reviews and broke box office records it's first week, but word of mouth among legions of fans and a cliff hanger ending that left audiences hanging, helped kill the franchises mojo. At the Movie House rating **stars

May 15-1998 - Twelve years ago two highly acclaimed actors turned director's released movies. Warren Beatty starred and directed in the political satire Bulworth and Robert Redford starred and directed the adaptation of the best selling novel The Horse Whisperer. Bulworth received high critical acclaim but crashed and burned at the box office. The Horse Whisperer received mixed reviews but it mixture of romance and sentimentality made it a box office hit. Nowadays it would be very rare for the studios to release such high profile pictures against each other nowadays

Bulworth *** stars
The Horse Whisperer **stars

May 15 1992 - Eighteen years ago the duo that defined the buddy cop movie, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, starred in Lethal Weapon 3. This one took us inside the L.A. subway and I didn't even know L.A. had a subway. It was a big hit. At the Movie House rating *** stars

May 15, 1987 - Twenty Three years ago Ishtar opened. It would go on to become one of the most infamous movies in Hollywood history. Known for the clashing ego's of it's director and stars, out of control budgets and probably the only movie where it's own studio went to great lengths to destroy it. Ishtar single handily turned the media into finance reporting. More reviews of the movie talked about the cost then they did the quality of the film. The film became synonymous for everything that is wrong with big budget, big star, ego driven projects in Hollywood. So many people have bad mouthed this movie even though they have never seen it. It has gained a reputation as one of the worst movies ever made, though it does not really deserve it.
At the Movie House rating **1/2 stars (parts of it are very funny.) The film has never been released on DVD.
